Posted by: Diane M on 2012-07-11, 18:06:13 Welcome back, zell. Long time no see. I'm fine with crossdressers. I don't have a lot in common with them. When transwomen get together, we talk about kids, jobs, books, TV, things like that. In my experience, when crossdressers get together they talk about lingerie, clothes, hair, makeup and so on. That is a generalization, but it fits what I've seen. There's nothing wrong with those topics, but they are a little limited. |

Posted by: Jessie on 2012-07-11, 16:35:23 Zell, you've been told before that we are not adjectives. deeplyproblematic.com/ 2010/ 05/ transgender-is-adjective-not-noun-or.html A person can no more be 'a trasgender' than they can be 'a blue' or 'a tall'. This is good in your case, or else we'd reclassify you as 'an ignorant'. Cross dressers do their schtick for fun. They're not in any way insulting or offending trans women. |

Posted by: Anna on 2012-07-11, 16:39:37 Whoa, poor grammar there. "Transgender " is an adjective, not a noun. Transgender is an umbrella term encompassing all uncommon gender identities or gender expressions. Crossdressing is included in this. If you're referring specifically to transsexual people (transsexualism being a specific medical condition resulting in a brain-body mismatch), then no, most transsexual people are perfectly fine with crossdressers. |

Posted by: Jessi S on 2012-07-11, 17:04:06 Why would they be offended? Transgender men and women are their own distinct people with their own distinct identity. Transvestites or "cross-dressers " are people who want to wear and appear to be of a gender which they are not. Yet they do not want to BE the gender that they are not. Drag queens are performers in a character. They are not transvestites or transgender. You're talking about three very different groups of people who have nothing to do with each other aside from a natural political alliance under the "queer " umbrella. |

Posted by: Zunden on 2012-07-11, 17:10:01 Jessie's answer is pretty good, and Anna's answer is just about perfect. "Transgender " is an adjective used to describe all forms of unusual gender identity and expression. Crossdressers have unusual gender expression, and therefore are ALSO transgender. If you want to ask specifically about transsexual people, the type of transgender identified specifically by cross-identification, then you should ask specifically about transsexual people. The answer that you seek, I believe, lies in the difference between regular transsexuals and transsexual separatists. Most transsexuals have no issue whatsoever with the other parts of the transgender spectrum, crossdressers included. However, there is a movement within the transsexual community known as the TS (transsexual) Separatists, who purport that transsexual rights are slowed and even undermined by the association of transsexuals with other forms of transgender people. Of course, this is complete bogus, and if you call them on it, they'll come up with BS that's as ridiculous (maybe more so) than if you try to call a fundamental Christian on the lack of evidence for a literal interpretation of Genesis. In any case, that's probably what you've been seeing if you think that transsexuals have an issue with crossdressers. |
