Question: In what specific ways could the christian churches minister to the homosexual and transgendered community? (Posted by: Jephunneh (pronounced: Ja-funny) on 2008-08-30 18:46:44) Not only gays and lesbians themselves, but many professional people who deal with homosexuals, believe that very frequently the Chruch tends to reject the gay or lesbian person. H. Kimball- Jones, a Methodist minister and counselor says, in his book "Toward a Christian Understanding of the Homosexual ": "There are untold thousands of homosexuals in America today who are forced to live secret lives, forced to live in constant doubt and fear, lest they be discovered and labled as outcasts of society...Their sexual anomaly has made them potential criminals in the eyes of the law and sinners in the eyes of the Church. The Church for the most part has made no attempt to understand them; along with the rest of society, it has viewed them with great contempt, closing its doors to them, failing to recognize them as children of God " (12- 13). In light of all this, HOW should the Church minister to the homosexual community? |

The Christian Church could start by not INCREASING human suffering, sadness and humiliation. Preventing unwanted children from being adopted. Preventing homosexual partners from committing to each other. Exiling young gays from their spiritual communities. AWFUL! SHAME on you people! If they just did THAT, they would be doing a world of good right there IMO. for others AND for their own churches. Oh, I have it. Wash the feet of some ridiculed and abandoned gay person. I believe there was another man who didn't mind doing that, long ago and far away. |

If this person cannot accept what the Lord teaches as truth, then there isn't much else the minister can do except leave the person alone to utilize his free will to his own desires It is up to The Lord on the Day of Judgement to reckon with anyone He feels needs to be reckoned with. |

No LGBT person is going to feel comfortable in a congregation that looks askance at them and chatters about them behind their backs. Sensitivity training of sorts for the clergy as well as the congregants may be in order. Once they have properly prepared themselves to deal with the LGBT public (i.e.--making an attempt to understand them), they need to build a community awareness of being an open and affirming church. Perhaps study groups with LGBT people would help dispel the myriad of myths and misconceptions that surround homosexuals. What better way of understanding the people than hearing answers from the people themselves? Reading some LGBT literature may also help. It's a bit dated but Randy Shilts' "And The Band Played On " is a great documentation of what happened in the 80s and 90s during the AIDS scare and how people in positions of power (doctors this time, not clergymen) controlled and manipulated information and data to meet their own selfish needs and purposes. How about visiting and volunteering at a local Gay Community Center or sitting in on a local PFLAG meeting? You can't expect the church simply to change their attitude toward the LGBT community in a day. This kind of change takes time. But by moving outside their circle of comfort and INTERACTING with the LGBT community, they will never see us as anything but "them. " If they happened to learn and begin to understand that we are simply people, just like them, we might expect a shift in the attitude of the church. |
