Question: Any one in the transgendered community think..........? (Posted by: warlock271980 on 2009-07-26 20:30:14) Would a talk show on network tv to educate the general population and provide support to others be a good idea? I my self want to be the one to do the show, I would be the hose myself. I am a transgenderist myself and feel with the help of outher transgendered indivuals I could verry well increase suport. it would cover every thing from the different terms to the problems we have in the work place. you know as a way to posibly get more tg friendly work places. I'm talking a show that is 100% tg no non tg influence what so ever. |

Posted by: Marin's <3 on 2009-07-26, 20:38:24 No... media doesn't support and educate... they use it to poke fun.... and I must say watching one persons life doesn't summarize the rest of the world... Watching Nick turn into Nina, or Gina turn into Greg, isn't going to summarize what happens to the rest of the world. Besides there is nothing to talk about... transsexuals/ transgenders exist.. why do they have to make their selves known to everyone... Chris Crocker has done a very good job as destroying the image of many... gays... or tg or watever the hell he/ she is... The people that will support the trans community do so already, all else either don't care or wanna kill them. Spreading the word isn't going to change the outcome, it might backfire just like the church did. |

Posted by: Bluffin' with my muffin! on 2009-07-26, 20:38:50 Not if it were hosted and led by non trans people. Because I'm sorry, but you all are terribly ignorant on the subject and keep wanting to put this stigma out there that transsexuality is related to being gay and it's not. You all also want to keep perpetuating misinformation about us..like trans people and crossdressers are the same, or transgender and transsexual are the same thing, and on and on and ON with the misinformation. I'd watch it if it were tasteful, TRUTHFUL, and educational. If it's just to put a negative image of us out there, like I see so many do, or just to use us poster childs for shows like Maury were it's like "Guess if they are a boy or a girl? " type things..then F*CK NO. |

Posted by: RadGal on 2009-07-26, 20:43:53 I agree with Muffin. Almost every documentary out there has MAJOR flaws in it because it's done by non's with an agenda. And part of that agenda is upholding old, tired stereotypes. Like Muffin I'm a healthcare worker. I'm a pretty normal person, leading a pretty normal, hum-drum life. But that's not what you see in those shows. They like to play up, to an extreme, how we're different. Change is going to come as more and more of us openly transition and people come to know us on a personal level. You don't get that with TV. edit: While noble I think you're going to be frustrated in the end. By putting yourself out there you're setting yourself apart. And, like it or not, the audience will see you as different as well. Real world, every day interaction in 3D is the way that people will learn. It would be nice if there was a faster way. It would also been helpful if you said up front that you are a transgenderist because most of us interpreted your question as being about transsexualism. The two are different. |

Posted by: Nikkiâ„¢ on 2009-07-26, 20:47:53 You mean like what Tyra Banks did the other day on her show?.. she even had the transgendered contestant on her show come back and speak to the crowd it was a great show! |

Posted by: Dana B on 2009-07-26, 20:49:22 No, i don't think so eighter. i think what would help is trans folk being out in there normal jobs, be it tv or whatever. in my opinion in a perfect world we would get our support from our existing friends, family, churches and community, and not NEED other trans people so much. anyway, trans people can't f'in get along. even i'm guilty. i HATE it when a trans girl with a wig and skirt and man voice sits with their legs like a man. (and the list goes on......) |

Posted by: ☆Purple Girl♀ on 2009-07-26, 21:45:58 I agree with Muffin. First, I am not a part of the transgender community. I am a member of the TS-Specific and HBS/ IS community, and do not want any transgender nor other non-TS speaking for me. We are capable of speaking for ourselves. True-TSs - mainstream persons with a birth defect - are denied the opportunity and right to speak for ourselves, and TGs and LGBTs arrogantly presume the right to speak for us. Someone who isn't transitioning completely with surgery and seeking to assimilate into and conform to mainstream culture has NO clue about nor the right to speak for those who do. We are not one family, our goals and needs are nowhere close, and we TSs would appreciate it if the TGs and LGBTs stayed out of our business, quit patronizing us, quit condescending to us, and quit trying to "help " (interfere with) us. A talk show about TSs would be a good idea, if it was hosted by an actual TS, if the participants were actually TSs (not transgenders), and if there is no agenda other than sharing the truth - not what benfits transgenders, the LGBT, the general public, and certainly not the bigots (the biggest anti-TS bigots are in the TG and LGBT community who express their bigotry by redefining who we are into something more convenient for them and constantly hijacking our terminology). So a TS show would be a good idea if: 1. It is hosted by actual TSs. 2. Actual fully-transitioning TSs who want to assimilate and conform are guests. 3. LGBT, TG, and sexual causes are not advertised during the show. Stick to TS ads or ads for mundane things like cleaning supplies, vehicles, and food. 4. Only TS issues are discussed. 5. Unrelated stuff like gayness and transgenderism isn't mentioned on every show. 6. Controversial issues that TGs/ LGBTs care about more than TSs do are not discussed. 7. That it is made clear that TSs are not a part of either the TG nor LGBT community, but the mainstream community (whether the mainstream bigots like it or not). 8. That it is made clear that TSs can do anything or have any opinion that non-TSs can have. For instance, make it clear that TSs can be Christians, Conservatives, bigots, anti-LGBT, etc., just like other mainstream persons. 9. That it is made clear that TSism is a birth defect, not a choice, orientation, nor sexuality. Make it clear that TSs don't want partners who prefer TSs, but people who don't notice they are TSs but treat them as fully born members of the sex they transitioned into. --- FYI, I side with 90% of the world - the combined Mainstream and TS community. The truth hurts. The thumb downs come from TGs (or TSs who are sold out to the TG community against the TS & Mainstream community), and not TSs. Only TSs complain of the apartheid and forced lumping with TGs, just like only slaves complained about slavery. Those benefitting TGs/ LGBTS or racist slave-owners are those who complain loudest when TSs have their own community apart from them or when slaves are granted their freedom, and neither can see why their victims are complaining. |

Posted by: Erica on 2009-07-28, 01:52:57 It's like this... Just having transpeople host a show to educate people doesn't mean the public will learn. People rarely watch television for educational purposes, no matter who does the show. Learning channels like DSC, TLC, HIS, educate, but do so in an entertaining format. The documentaries are usually exciting, have high production values, CGI, etc. When these channels do air shows about transsexualism, the shows are produced by cisgender people, and always have an ulterior motive (ratings, entertainment) so they always incorporate some form of drama, or surprise, or shock, or conflict. Just learning the facts would bore most people. What COULD possibly work would be a dramatic show where one of the principle characters was a transsexual person undergoing transition. If it was a good show, and the subject was handled correctly, it could have the potential to completely change the public's understanding. For example, if House were to come out as a transsexual woman, and begin the process of transition, I suspect a huge number of people would watch (and learn) because the show itself is captivating. (PS - if Hollywood uses this storyline, I WANT THE CREDIT!) |
